In the early 1980s, four Scandinavian scientists — Georg Guðmundsson, Horst Guðmundsson, Jules Haugen, and Cleif Járvinen — took part in a research project in Greenland called Niu Teningur: the Nine Cubes.

Little is known about what happened there. All four men moved on to other work and have refused to discuss it since. What records survive suggest the experiments laid groundwork for technologies we still rely on today.

After the project ended, the four formed the underground band Kasvot Växt and released one album, í rokk, on the Norwegian label Elektrisk Tung in 1985. It remains one of the most influential records to come out of the Nordic countries, though nearly every copy has since been lost or destroyed. A mere handful of bootleg tapes survive, for those willing to look.

Nine Cubes Labs takes its name from that experiment. We don't know exactly what happened in Greenland, and at this point, we doubt anyone fully does. But the idea stuck: a single cube, examined closely enough, reveals the next one inside it. Clarity comes in layers, one cube at a time.

That's the company we built around that idea: bookkeeping, software development, and public speaking. Three different disciplines, one shared job: take something complicated and make it clear.

We are the Nine Cubes.
